I’m Simon McLean, a tour guide, photographer and postgraduate history student with an enduring curiosity about Scotland.
My work takes me across the country, from its cities and the central Highlands to the west coast and islands. Along the way, I collect photographs, recommendations and stories about the places I visit and the people I meet.
I started Adventures Across Scotland to bring these things together: useful information for travellers, deeper historical context and ideas for adventures of your own.
Adventures Through Landscape
Scotland’s mountains and glens, islands and coastlines are what first draw many people here—but there is far more to exploring them than following a list of famous attractions.
I want to share the places I know well, the viewpoints and walks worth seeking out, and the practical details that can make the difference between a memorable visit and a disappointing one. I will also offer honest opinions about popular destinations, common mistakes visitors make and places that deserve more attention than they receive.
Through photography, personal experience and location-based recommendations, the Explore Scotland section will help you discover more of the country and make more of the time you spend here.
Adventures Through Time
Every Scottish landscape has layers of history beneath it.
My own fascination with Scotland’s past eventually led me to study for an MLitt in the History of the Highlands and Islands at the University of the Highlands and Islands, which is now approaching its final stages.
The Stories section will explore some of the people, events and ideas that have shaped Scotland—from major historical changes to overlooked local stories. My aim is not simply to repeat familiar facts, but to ask interesting questions, share different interpretations and make historical research enjoyable to read.
Adventures Through Culture
The best part of travelling anywhere is surely the people you meet along the way.
Scotland is found not only in its castles and landscapes, but in its communities, conversations, music, literature and gathering places. I want to introduce you to some of the local characters who bring the country to life, as well as my favourite pubs, music venues, books and other experiences that can deepen your understanding of the country.
These cultural discoveries will appear throughout the website and across the Adventures Across Scotland social channels, where I also hope to share conversations with some of the people who live, work and create here.
